Art, artists, prison art

Joseph Ullery

After many years of searching, I have been contacted by someone whose family possess three paintings by Joe Ullery.  Joe’s work came to my attention in the early 1960s.  The works were at the Barrios Gallery in Sacramento, owned by Benny Barrios, a painter of some note.  The works had been purchased from an art show at Vacaville Medical Center.  That facility is a part of the California prison system.  After his release, Ullery was associated with a restaurant in the East bay area, possibly Oakland or Berkeley.  New information has it that Ullery taught painting to local amateurs, including the mother of the family that now owns three pieces.
